243 - 'Euro' Roadtrip Kick-off (Bonus Version) 🗺️
If you were tuning in to CBC London Morning earlier this week, you likely heard our editor kicking off the station’s “‘Euro’ Roadtrip” with an introduction to some of this city’s lesser-touted tourist experiences.
The interview was so much fun, we decided to take this edition of the Localist and fill it up with some supplemental links for you to explore further!
Enjoy Some Outdoor Sculpture 🗿
🤲 Looking to get outside and enjoy some of this city’s funnest outdoor sculpture? Start your journey down at Ivey Park where “Good Hands” honours the Tolpuddle Martyrs —a group of farm labourers from 1830’s England who imigrated to London after spending time in an Australian penal colony for their part in an influential (and, at the time, unlawful) labour movement.
⛲️ From there, head down to the forks to enjoy the Walter J. Blackburn Memorial Fountain before strolling up the hill to stand guard with Gino Lorcini’s Sentinel.
⚖️ After that, swing by the courthouse to marvel at the hardest pillows you’ve ever seen and this playful piece from Ed Zelenek.
🎓 If you’re around the University at all, make sure to swing by the McIntosh Gallery’s sculpture garden or this labyrinth at Brescia.
☝️ Oh yeah: and don’t forget to check out Jeffrey Rubinoff’s signature scluptures outside the entrance to the mall he also designed!

Explore the variety of 169 Wharncliffe 🛍️
We’ve had a soft-spot for this city’s plazas since issue number 16, but the mix of businesses who call 169 Wharncliffee home still tops the list for us. Where else in town are you able to enjoy Pizza, craft beer, Convienence, Beauty, Sweets, and a generous helping Yemeni cuisine from the Mandi Guys?!

Ride the bus to the four-corners of the city 🚍
Hop on a bus, head out in any direction, and you’re in for a treat. Here’s some of our favourite stops from the end(ish) of each line!
⬆️ Heading north, you’re gonna want to get off at stop #1477 to enjoy the splashpad, community pool and picnic areas at Gibbons Park, before a short walk along the TVP to the Banana Kingdom.
⬇️ Head south, and let the driver know you’ll be getting off at stop #2206 to enjoy White Oaks’ pool, library, skate park, and the mall with all the sculpture (see above 😉).
➡️ Head east to stop #878 and you’re set for an afternoon of fun at East Park—where go-carts, mini-golf, a wavepool and London’s most infamous—and recently rebuilt— waterslides (RIP Wally World) reside!
⬅️ Head west and get off at stop #2545 where you’re a short stroll through the neighbourhood before coming to the entrance of Kains Woods’ — a ~6km trail along the river. Bring your binoculars (for the birds) and your boots (for the mud and hills).
