178 - Share the Harvest 🌾
Over 2021, 1 in 7 London-Middlesex households experienced food insecurity—and things aren’t looking much better this year. Thankfully, a number of local agencies, organizations and everyday citizens are hard at work to turn things around. Here’s just three of the new and innovative ways Londoners are stepping up to share the harvest.
1. Community Fridge London 🧊
Located outside Southcrest’s St. John the Divine, London’s first outdoor community fridge opened last month after a year of planning and the hard work of a few neighbours who saw a need in their community and set out to meet it. Read more about the “take what you need/leave what you can” project here. 📰

2. Minomode-zewin nunge-gehwin 🚀
Run by the Southwest Ontario Aboriginal Health Access Centre (SOAHAC), Minomode-zewin nunge-gehwin is a food bank pilot project launching later this fall with a goal to battle food insecurity and connect the Indigenous people it will serve to traditional foods otherwise hard to find in an urban setting. To learn more, have a listen to this podcast episode from grant partners London Community Foundation featuring SOAHAC’s Nancy Buchanan and Jocelyn Zurbrigg! 🎧

3. Urban Roots London 🌾
This urban farm—located just off Highbury and Hamilton—has been supplyling fresh, healthy produce to local charities, restaurants and the public for more than five harvests now. They’re also (de)paving the way forward when it comes to revitalizing unused land to reap numerous community benefits. Check out this video for a great introduction to their work. 👀
