166 - Lawn Games 🌞
Lawn games are their own brand of fun aren’t they? They can be as easy-going as they can be intense, and even the most traditional games tend to have their own neighbourhood rules.
If you’ve got a regular game going on—leave a note in the comments, or tag @thelocalistyxu on the ‘gram to let us know what and where you’re playing (we’re looking at you, Blackfriars Croquet League)!
Until then, here’s some of the formalized fun to be had with these sorts of shenanigans.
Lawn Summer Nights 🎳
Whether you’re more interested in the uniform/costume, or the Lawn Bowling itself—on the grounds of the city’s oldest club—Lawn Summer Nights offers a chance to make a dent in the fight to cure Cystic Fibrosis. To date, the national fundraiser has raised over $4M for Cystic Fibrosis Canada; and there’s still space to register a team for this year!

Elmwood Lawn Bowling 🎳
Take a stroll down Edward St. in Old South and if you’re not paying attention, you may walk right by the Elmwood Lawn Bowling Club. They’ve been around since 1911 and the story goes they got the land as neighbours enjoying the sport donated parts of their lawns to ensure a space for all to play.

FCSSC Lawn Games 🌽🕳
Though registration for this year is closed, we expect there’ll be a few of you interested in the mix of lawn games Forest City Sports and Social Club offers over the summer. Their hat-league runs June through July and switches it up from week to week at Fanshawe Conservation Area with games of Bocce, Cornhooe, Spikeball and more!

The Club House Bocce Ball Leagues ☂️
Is a lawn game still a lawn game if it’s played indoors? Who cares?! There’s an indoor Bocce Ball league over at The Factory running throughout the wet and rainy spring to enjoy. We’ve got our fingers crossed they’ll be running again when the sn*w flies.

The London Cannonballs Boccia Club 💣
The London Cannonballs Boccia Club has been having a blast promoting the Paralympic sport—akin to curling and lawn bowling—since they were founded over 30 years ago by local Paralympian Deb Willows. This year, they’re also hosting the 2022 Canadian Boccia Championships when it comes to town in November!
