127 - Meet March 👋
Welcome to March—the month we’ve been living for a whole year now. The last thing we were thinking a year ago was that we'd be offering a list full of virtual and socially distanced events this March….but regardless of the circumstances, there’s a lot going on in this city. Here’s a trio of things we’re looking forward to most.
1. International Women’s Day 🌐
Both the London Abused Women’s Center and LUSO Community Services are headed online with their events this year as they #ChooseToChallenge and “sow the seeds of change.”
We’ll also throw it back to which is full of great links to organizations, artists and educators paving the way forward for women in this city.
Finally, check out the recently released Her Defined Podcast—dedicated to “sharing real-life experiences from successful entrepreneurial and businesswomxn.”
2. #FilthyFridays 🚯
Be warned, this hashtag is not the safest for a work environment at the moment... but that’s all set to change when we take it over with pics of the litter we’re picking up on our strolls around the neighbourhood on Fridays.
So, grab a garbage bag, some gloves (or one of those picker-upper things), and check out The COB Shop’s post about it for more information!
3. More Music 🤘
The London Music Office is currently running “Revive Live:” a series of live streamed concerts featuring a selection of artists across various genres. We’re personally stoked for the SUM-01/DJ Hullewood show this Saturday and the return of Thunder Queens, who will be opening for Heart Attack Kids later this month.
The Aeolian’s Phoenix Sessions continues this month as well, and features two of OEV's favourites with performances by Marty Kolls tomorrow (March 5) and Fraser Teeple on March 26th.
⚠️ BONUS SECTION ⚠️
Sidewalks and the City 🚧
With opposition to new sidewalks becoming an increasingly complicated matter (despite a master plan calling for them), the city’s Civic Works Committee has called a special meeting on March 15th to hear from residents.
While the opportunity to speak “in person” has passed, Londoners still have until 9am on Monday, March 8th to submit a letter to cwc@london.ca for consideration/the record.
We know these matters are contentious because there’s often mature trees and property values etc. in the mix, but we also believe that—in the long run—more sidewalks make better neighbourhoods for everyone.
👉 That’s why we’re giving away five FREE t-shirts 😲 to the first five people who send us a copy of the letters they’re submitting to the Committee in support of the policies we’ve already got in place.* Think of it like an “I voted” sticker—except it’s a shirt.
Email us your letter via editor@thelocal.ist for your chance to win today!
For more on the issue(s), here’s a few articles to read up on from The London Free Press, CBC and CTV News.

*If you’re not a fan of the proposed sidewalks, we’d still encourage you to submit a letter ... we’re just guessing you’re not interested in a shirt that reads “Sidewalks are Sexy.” 😉
