Meet Mariam đ
With the recent publication of her Consciously Curated Gift Guide, we figured now was a great time to introduce localist Mariam Waliji. When sheâs not busy supporting local social enterprises through her work with Pillar Nonprofit Network, youâll most likely find her serving on the board of Urban Roots London or outside with a camera in one hand, a hot chocolate in the other, and her dog, Orion close by.
1. Whatâs one of Londonâs best-kept secrets? đ€«
Kains Woods isnât a secret anymore (), so Iâll go with Brydges Collectibles (formerly âBrydges St. Antiques Marketâ). Itâs laid out like a wonderful maze with great (and weird) stuff at every turn. I have a hard time leaving without having purchased a gift for a friend or something to spruce up my home.Â
2. Whatâs your favourite way to spend a Saturday in London? đ„Ÿ
Thatâs easy: by taking âobviously with Orion. Ideally, itâll last a couple hours, be in the snow and is followed with a hot chocolate from Locomotive or Sidetrack.Â
3. Tell us about the last London thing you recommended to friends. đïž
I love giving gifts and making recommendations, so I recently put together this gift guide featuring my favourite local businesses, artists, musicians, etc. Everyone on the list is making a positive impact in our community and thatâs something I can hype any time, but especially this year and in this season.
4. What are you looking forward to in London next year? đ€
Iâm looking really forward to exploring and celebrating food with friends again. Nothing beats sitting around a shared table. Hereâs hoping thatâll return in the next 12 months.Â
5. Who should Londoners be paying attention to? đ
Being on the board, Iâm really passionate about the work Urban Roots London is putting into local food systems. If youâre at all interested in urban agriculture, follow our socials or keep an eye on our news page. Iâve also been inspired lately by Forest City Gallery. Theyâre doing great work forâand throughâLondonâs art scene and theyâre well worth the follow.
