105 - Meet Jay 👋
When Jay Lawrence isn’t working to run YFC London’s Team Compass, he’s likely busy investing in this city’s youth some other way. As a recipient of London Community Foundation’s “Vital People Award,” Coach Jay’s got a knack for noticing potential—which is why we were excited to get his take on London these days.
1. What’s one of London’s best-kept secrets?
🤫
The New Delhi Deli in Covent Garden. The lady who runs it, Bhan, is an absolute legend. She's like the auntie who's house you'd visit for the food alone. I once saw a bus driver jump out at the stop, grab his food from Bhan, and jump back on his way with passengers waiting lol.
2. What’s your favourite way to spend a Saturday in London? ❤️
Having kids, I’ve come to enjoy how many beautiful parks there are in London—especially those with pools in the summer. Don’t miss out on these!
3. Tell us about the last London thing you recommended to friends. 🗣️
The Reef Bakery on Southdale is a must for their spicy chicken manwhich (a cross between a manakeesh and a sandwich). I love how diverse the city is becoming and we get to sample the amazing flavors from home for many people.
4. What are you looking forward to in London this year? 🗓️
Christmas is going to be extra special this year. It has been a challenging 2020, but for many, it’s put things into perspective and I expect we’ll be celebrating with a renewed value on family and people over presents and possessions.
5. Who should Londoners be paying attention to? 👂
I am biased, but there is a growing basketball community in the city. The standard of youth basketball is higher than it has ever been, with more and more young people experiencing life-changing opportunities and earning scholarships through the sport.
BONUS! ⚡
It's not too late to check out the (free) 2nd annual Place Matters Conference. Running until Sunday, this year's line-up of speakers and events looks to build on the success of last year's inaugural event.
