073 - The Cyclist š“
Weāve mentioned cycling a lot in this publication. To be honest, the Localist editors love bikes. There is no better way to connect with you city than biking through it. Cycling is the perfect pace for urban experience. Itās good for your health. Apparently itās good for your sex life too (#8). Check out all the pedal-power going on in our city!
š¼ļø Art of the Wheel
You donāt have to be a total bike nerd to appreciate the sleek lines, bold colours, and perfect asymmetric art of a bicycle. Some bikes (like these handbuilt steads from the Forest City) are art in themselves. Bike beauty has also inspired some of Londonās finest artists. The father of London Regionalism is perhaps best known for his mariposas, and this artistās photography makes pedals pop!
š Events
Every season is bike season with the right attitude, and this warmer spring weather is bringing plenty of bike-themed events to get you motivated! While the details of London Celebrates Cycling (a week filled with cycle-centric events and activities) are still in the works, London Cycle Link is getting hyped to welcome bike-buddies to their annual Bike Prom! If youāre not yet a cyclist but are curious to try it out, join Bike to Work Day on May 27 to see just how doable cycling can be.
š²š² Group Rides
Weāve already mentioned Bike to Work Day, but there are some cycling groups that ride regularly. Weāve got groups for all ages and abilities, from the Children Museumās day camp to the London Centennial Wheelers. Be sure to check out the Old East Village Riding Group and London Cycling Club too. Anyone remember Critical Mass group rides? Bring it back now, yāall!
š Education
London has no shortage of skilled and friendly bike shops. But honestly, getting into bikes can still be intimidating. Thereās a lot of lingo and a lot of grease and a lot of threatening cars. Lucky for us, Tech Tuesdays happen every week so you can learn to maintain your own bike. Can-Bike London is starting them young by bringing safe cycling education into elementary schools around the city.
Bonus!Ā
If you care about cycling in London, the City needs to hear about it. Share your thoughts in any of the upcoming urban redevelopment plans, and connect with other bike groups to get updates on more hard-hitting advocacy opportunities.
