062 - International Women’s Day 🤷
Tomorrow (Friday, March 8th) is International Women’s Day. Taking our cues from this year’s theme—here’s a few ways to #BalanceForBetter. Celebrate the hard work of womxn in London get to work on building a more equitable city.
👩🏿💼 Leave it to the Professionals
The gender pay gap is real. Harassment and abuse are real. Gender bias is real. There are lots of factors that make professional pursuits challenging for women. Luckily, the fight for equality is not solitary. This group is working across Canada and in London to amplify women’s voices. This one is working to ensure femme-citizens are represented in politics.
👩🏻🎤 Women to the Front
With deep punk roots, this city has no shortage of women who rock. Keep tabs on the scene with Girls Rock Camp, Mum Jeans Booking or any number of femme-fronted bands in the Forest City. You can also check out Women to the Front, which runs until March 31st at Museum London and pays respect to the influence of Canadian women on the Canadian music industry with its own merch table, subversive gig posters and podcast stations.
👩🏽💼 Entrepren-her-ship
We’ve featured a lot of local businesses in this newsletter. And a lot of them are run by really rad gal pals. London’s local business scene proves there ain’t nothing a woman can’t do. The list is long—but still not as long as the list of businesses owned by men, so get out there and support!
👩🏻⚕️Health and Safety
Calling us to “Get Ovar-y It,” Here for Her’s crews and tees are sparking conversations about women’s health, and that’s important for everybody. Period. Speaking of which, Tampon Tuesday just celebrated its 10 year anniversary in London! Stigma around menstruation isn’t the only threat to women’s wellbeing in London. Violence and abuse are real concerns too, which is why organizations like Anova, My Sister’s Place and LAWC are working tirelessly (despite funding cuts) to make London a safe place for everyone.
