053 - Resolutions of a Different Kind đ„
The grand tradition of making a New Yearâs Resolution can either be a great way to implement big life changes, or an anxiety-producing, high-pressure way to fail by February. Letâs start 2019 off with some bite-sized alternative resolutions, and make some positive changes thatâll stick!
đïž Resolve to Lower Waste
Going âzero wasteâ can be daunting to some, but we can all reduce the amount of waste we produce in 2019 by breathing new life into vintage duds from Filthy Rebena; renting an outfit that wows from new London start-up STMNT; taking our coffee to-go in our own mugs (and getting a discount for it at Localist faves Rebel Remedy and Locomotive Espresso); or relying less on single-use products with more durable items from Reimagine Co. or Unwrapped Zero Waste Marketplace.
đš Resolve to Make Art
Nurture a creative practice in 2019 through doodling, drawing, painting, or sculpting to combine some of the best aspects of personal expression with the cognitive benefits of meditation and reducing stress. Check out Bijanâs Art Studio for every medium you might need, and then head over to TAP: Centre for Creativity for an inexpensive drawing or painting class. The London Clay Art Centre offers 8-10 week courses that will also leave you with some functional art to admire (and use) for years to come! Stuck for inspiration? Museum London hosts free tours of their exhibitions Sundays at 2pm.
đ Resolve to Explore
Londonâs location makes it a great place to head out and enjoy any number of , so why not resolve to explore the surrounding area in 2019?! Mark your calendars for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Lake Huron near MacGregor Point Provincial Park this summer, and check out the massive Pinery Antique Flea Market (from May-October) on your way home. Head out for Eggs Benny at the (vegan and carnivore friendly) Planet Diner in Stratford before stocking up on the weekâs groceries from the Stratford Slow Food Market. Long Pointâs Biosphere Reserve is world-class (literally), and Stubâs Grub ainât that bad either!
đ§ Resolve to Prioritize Your Mental Health
Put your mental health first with a walk through Fanshawe Conservation Area while listening to the locally produced (and hilarious) podcast RETWEET for hot talks on spicy subjects (like Growing Up Ugly) andâhow Ă proposâMental Health. Check out Martina Biljanâs free online â15-minute Slowdownâ for a gentle and meditative yoga-flow on Tuesdays, or get the brain juices flowing with a little sweat at Niki At The Mat's pay-what-you-can pilates classes on Saturdays at the Covent Garden Market this January 12 - March 30.
