037 - Like a Tourist 🗺️
In the fall of 2014, Editors of The Localist explored London like they were visitors—starting the day at Tourism London and then following the recommendations of locals they met along the way. Retrace our steps with this week’s list….or walk up to someone looking like they’re from around here and discover the city through their suggestions!
☕ Black Walnut
The Black Walnut (OG location) is certainly part of an authentic London experience. Noted more for it’s baked goods (Cruffins anyone?) than varieties of caffeine, this local stop provides the small town feel of Wortley Village within the larger Forest City.
🍔 Prince Albert’s Diner
Prince Al’s was recommended on more than one occasion to us. Whether you get classic diner food like a shake or poutine, or you mix it up with a Wally Burger or perogies, you gotta eat here.
🎡 Western Fair
If it’s September, nothing says “London, Ontario” like “Western Fair.” This means that as of today—Thursday, September 13th, 2018—you have exactly three days left to enjoy pigs, cows, Burton Cummings, good (and deep-fried) food, carnival rides, and the return of the Demolition Derby!
🐍 Canadian Corps
In the east end and looking for a cold beverage on a hot weekend afternoon? We’ve recommended the St. Regis Tavern () and your local legion before (), but back in ‘14, we were directed to The Canadian Corps on Dundas. Check it out yourself for a pint, a little dancing, and a chance to meet local legend, “Snake.”
☎️ Call The Office
Cap the day off at one of the longest operating live music venues in the city: Call The Office. They’ve got “50” on tap, pinball machines at the ready, and walls lined with photos of those who’ve shared the eclectic stage—including , Radiohead, Arcade Fire and Alvvays.
