033 - Where to See Outdoor Sculpture 🗿
As the birthplace of the London Regionalism movement, there’s a lot of great art across the city—especially outside. Here’s some of our favourite sculptural pieces!
The Courthouse 🔨
The verdict is in: London’s courthouse is guilty of featuring some truly great outdoor sculptures on its grounds.
Exhibit A: Walter Redinger’s tender Xabis.
Exhibit B: This “gutsy” piece from Ed Zelenak.
The University 🥋
There’s art all over Western’s campus, but sculptor Ross Bell’s The Last Stand has to be our favourite… based solely on its invitation to try your best Kung Fu on it.
The Mall 🛍️
Who knew great art existed so close to the food court? Or that this towering sculpture at the Wellington St. entrance to White Oaks Mall was created by the same guy who designed the mall itself?! We’ve got the late London-born sculptor, Jeffrey Rubinoff, to thank for both.
The Forks 📻
It seems the forks of the river is the place to memorialize; both Sentinel (Lorcini) and The Walter J. Blackburn Memorial Fountain (Ron Kudys Landscape Architects Inc., Dan Euser Water Architecture) pay tribute to the city’s broadcasting pioneer, while Good Hands (Bobier, Putnam) honours the Tolpuddle Martyrs just across the river in Ivey Park.
The Home Hardware 🤘
We’ve mentioned him recently, but we can’t let a list on public sculptures get published without mentioning the wonder that is EOA Sasquatch (Austin, Wenzoski).
